Review by Paul Catchpool
This is a must have guide or ‘map’ for anyone that is serious about developing their teaching skills within the LLL sector as well as their CPD. Very clearly and succinctly, the book takes you on an informative journey, looking at key themes such as professional and reflective practice and scholarly writing .
It is a brave thing to try and broach academic, theoretical frames of references with teachers in FE that have come from a typically work based vocational industry, but this book skilfully does just that. It bridges the gap by easing you into the text through common, practical and applicable frames of reference for all and then takes you through the more complex aspects of theory before wrapping up with discussions and conclusions. Each chapter is then rounded off with a comprehensive set of references that aid further study if desired.
Two chapters that I found particularly informative were: ‘Are Lesson plans important’. Very useful for those struggling to come to terms with how to plan them effectively. It takes an honest look at the trials and tribulations that teaches face in writing them and puts a case forward for why and how they might be used. I came away after reading this chapter thinking that lesson plans deserve more respect and attention then I’d been currently giving them!
There is so much written and much rhetoric around reflective practice and thinking, that sometimes you wish for a very simple interpretation that enables you to ‘reflect’ as intended without being confused! In a matter of 12 pages or so this chapter tells you everything that you need to know about the fundaments of reflective practice and puts you back into the frame of engaging with it in a positive and motivating way.

Review by Paul Catchpool
This is a practical book that challenges you and turns you into an active reader! Case studies are always a good way to capture your attention and contextualise issues and concerns. This book does just that. Each chapter follows a theme where case studies play a pivotal role in reflection, a summary and an aspect that I found particularly useful and challenging – ‘the branching options’ designed to help consolidate what you have learned in a reflective way. A note of caution regarding this aspect; if you struggle with reflective or retrospective thinking then this will be a refining process and a learning curve for you. Although I hasten to add, for the betterment of you as a teacher! Once again, each chapter finishes with a comprehensive reference and further reading guide.
You can dip into this book at various stages thanks to carefully considered sections that cover three main areas. The first is a review of communication theory and how it can be applied in practice. The second is recognising the emotional element to communication and the third looks at the dynamics of specific communication issues with much larger groups before focussing on colleagues and then resources.
With this in mind I was drawn to chapter 5, ‘The human factor in communication’. This is a sympathetic and open look at the important role that emotion plays in communication, the power that it has in either making or breaking rapport and the subsequent impact it has on T&L. It aims to dismiss the notion that we should be void of emotion, but to recognise it, understand and accept it as part of our condition in order that we may harness it to enhance the teaching and learning experience.
At all stages this book is designed to be read! What I mean by this is the pace of the material is consistent, rendering it easily understood regardless of the complexity of the topics engaged with. To this end, the books structure is meticulously considered and put together.
